In Matt 14:29 Peter, seeing Jesus out there walking on the water, jumps out of the boat and walks toward him. The weight (pun intended) of what he was doing finally caught up to Peter whereupon he immediately begins sinking under the waves.
I am just like that. In fact I have had some major “oh snap I am walking on the water” moments. Like the time I committed to running the full Dallas marathon on Sunday and walking 18 holes at Pebble Beach (longer story) on Monday. However the biggest leap I ever made without looking seemed like no leap at all!
It was April 2010, 6 pm, the night before transplant surgery the next morning. I was giving a kidney (which is much less of a big deal than it sounds like) to a dear friend that next day and my friend and Pastor David had come by to pray and visit with Sally and I.
It was a nice thing David was doing and all was going well until… I actually processed for the first time what was about to happen. I know what you are thinking; Is that even possible? To get this far and not really thought about it. The answer is yes.
Throughout the whole donation process all we kept saying at every step is, well it’s just a blood test, just a kidney scan, just more blood work, just a Baylor transplant review board approval, just a surgery, etc. In all sincerity I tell you there had never been a nerve racking moment up until sitting there next to Sally and David asking me … are you ready to give your friend one of your 2 good kidneys tomorrow and live the rest of your life on one?”
I started sinking under the waves immediately. And eventually like Peter, Jesus propped me firmly back up.
Question of the Week: Have you ever made a big leap on faith to only later realize how big it was?
